La House for Relief of Suffering It was created to support people affected by rare diseases and their families and is a cutting-edge center both in terms of equipment and clinical approach.
This hospital is one of the gifts left as a legacy by Padre Pio. Padre Pio arrived at the hermitage of San Giovanni Rotondo in 1916; two years later he received the stigmata and this event brought a great influx of sick people on pilgrimage in search of relief.
Direct contact with so many suffering people pushed Padre Pio to create a hospital that would help people heal in body and spirit. In 1940 he began to give shape to his idea with the collaboration of some of his “spiritual children”: Guglielmo Sanguinetti, Mario Sanvico, Carlo Kisvarday, John Telfener, Ida Seitz, Angela Serritelli, Cleonice Morcaldi.
The facility, designed by Angelo Lupi and inaugurated on May 5, 1956, was initially equipped with 250 beds and already included the departments of surgery and general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, laboratories for clinical examinations, orthopedics, and outpatient clinics.
